Ahhh, beautiful Maui!
If you’ve never been you are in for a treat – that is, if you like tropical, paradisical islands with a variety of things to do and see and vistas around every corner which compete with one another for being the most fantastic. Sure, it’s a bit of a hike to get there (at least a five hour flight from anywhere in North America), but as soon as you disembark and smell that plumeria-scented air, you’ll be hooked!
While many people choose to honeymoon in Hawaii, couples, sports enthusiasts, families and singles will feel right at home here as well. There is truly something for everyone.
Note: Click on pictures for full-sized versions.
As a quick rundown, the main airport on Maui is in Kahului, a bustling city with many permanent residents. We always rent a car (Orbitz always has great prices and gives a comparative rundown) and drive straight to the Whole Foods, which not only has a fantastic selection of yummy food to stock up on but also a lovely array of Hawai’ian goods, making it the coolest Whole Foods ever! Grab some lunch and snacks and go – you will likely be staying in a resort area, and almost all hotels are a ways from the main airport and from Kahului. Luckily, the roads are good, and because of the time difference from the mainland, most flights arrive midday, giving you time to drive to your resort destination in the daylight, enjoying the sights of Maui.
Where to Stay on Maui
There are several popular vacation areas on Maui, and many activities to enjoy. You will need a car to get around the island if you plan on venturing out at all. Maui resort and vacation areas include:
Wailea: An upscale resort are on the southeastern end of Maui, with golf courses and some of the finest hotels, shopping and beaches in the world. Here you will find the Four Seasons, Wailea Beach Marriott, Fairmont Kea Lani and many private villa communities such as the Wailea Beach Villas, Ekahi and Elua, and The Palms at Wailea, as well as the Shops at Wailea, featuring high end shopping. This area is, in our opinion, the most beautiful resort area on Maui to stay, and is fairly convenient to Kihei shopping and dining.
Kihei: Kihei is a great place to relax and enjoy the local beaches and the laid back spirit of Maui. It lies along the southern coast along a bay, and there are myriad shops, restaurants, condos and resorts in Kihei. More relaxed and less expensive than Wailea, Kihei is a great town to rent a condo (try VRBO) and just chill out.
Maalaea: Smaller and more intimate then Kihei, this coastal town offers more condos by the ocean and also a famous aquarium, popular with tourists. Also found here is the popular restaurant Buzz’s Wharf. Look for whales off the beach in season!
Lahaina: Around the northwestern corner of Maui you will come to the famous town of Lahaina, a cultural center of Maui and a popular place to both stay and visit. Lahaina is a lovely oceanfront town with many charming shops, inns and restaurants, and it also serves as a cruise port, along with Kahului. The main streets are bustling with tourists on days when ships are in port. You will find a lot of local art here, along with charter fishing and dolphin- and whale-sighting tours at the marina.
Ka’anapali: Further along the main road along this part of Maui you will find the popular resort area of Ka’anapali. Unlike Lahaina, which is actually an old town, Ka’anapali was built specifically as a resort area, with hotels such as the Hyatt, Sheraton, and Westin lining the narrow beach. There is great shopping and dining both in the hotels and at the Whaler’s Village, and good snorkeling along the sandy beach, particularly at black rock. Golfing is good in this area and further up the coast towards Kapalua. Snorkeling gear and trips are readily available at local dive shops like Boss Frog’s and Snorkel Bob’s (beware the timeshare sales pitches, though!). There is a Polynesian Cirque show in Ka’anapali, and several popular evening Luaus.
Napili: Napili is a resort area with great snorkeling and dining, and public oceanfront parks. You will find many bed and breakfast places as well as resorts that are more affordable and perhaps more charming and homey than those in the more popular tourist areas such as Wailea and Ka’anapali. Most resemble large, sprawling motels and have community pools and amenities. In the many bays along this stretch you’ll see turtles frolicking in the surf and can access public beaches for sunning and snorkeling.
Kapalua: Home of the Ritz Carlton Maui Resort, this windswept and beautiful area is worth the drive. You may not be guaranteed the sun and heat of Lahaina, but the vistas are truly stunning and the flora is more lush due to higher annual rainfall. Craggy volcanic rock formations, whale sightings and the verdant hillside make this area absolutely beautiful and worth a visit, even if you just drive there for an afternoon.
Paia: This charming town is on the north end of Maui, not far from the airport in Kahului. You’ll find quaint shops and restaurants, along with condos and small resorts. This area and the beaches further along the coast towards Hana are popular with surfers and kitesurfers…you can see them as you are landing at the airport.
Hana: Of course the legendary road to Hana trip leads to the tiny town of Hana, on Maui’s rugged and very tropical northeast coast. From Kahului, you can expect to drive for about 3 hours to reach Hana, and it is no exaggeration to say that the road is fraught with switchbacks and areas of one lane highway which require awareness and care to navigate. You can also drive around the back, eastern side of the Maui to Hana, although this will invalidate most rental car agreements, as will driving from Kahului to Kapalua around the northern coast.
Things to do on Maui
One of the best things about Maui is its incredible diversity. As with all the islands of Hawaii, Maui is a volcanic island. In some places lush and tropical, others high desert and still others rainy and cool, there is always a new vista on Maui. Around every corner is a new and stunning view, a fantastic beach or bay, a staggeringly beautiful mountain or cliff. The smaller islands of Molokai, Molokini and Lanai and others frame the backdrop for countless gorgeous views. The water sparkles and crashes on the shores, the whales and dolphins frolick in the bays, the palms sway in the breeze and glint in the sun and the mountains rise with majesty above it all, in many places with cascading waterfalls.

What a cool place! The Daddy-O Hotel, technically nestled in the Bay Harbor Islands area (think Bal Harbour), is truly a gem. We visited in June of 2010 when the hotel had only been open a few months. The Daddy-O Hotel in Miami is an offshoot of the original in New Jersey, run by the same group and offering a similar but unique chic, upscale vibe, as befits its surroundings in the very posh neighborhood.
This place is a small gem, and offers visitors everything they could want in a tucked-away boutique hotel, especially those who are looking for some upscale shopping. With Bal Harbor shops steps from the front door and the Aventura Mall only a few minutes’ drive away, this hotel offers the perfect sanctuary. The rooms – and staff – are cheery and inviting, and Martin the manager is exceptional. During our stay I witnessed him going out of his way to ensure guests were happy, and he works very hard to provide a seamless and enjoyable stay for all of his guests, whom he usually knows by name after first meeting them. With Martin’s background in upscale hotel management, it should come as no surprise that the hotel owners hired him; he is a huge asset to the property. 2011 Note: we’re told Martin is no longer with the hotel, so cannot give any account about the new manager in place, and the latest additions or deletions of services included. Check a site like Orbitz.com for the latest!
Along with the chic vibe of the Daddy-O Hotel Miami comes a surprising list of benefits, all at a very affordable price for the area. There’s complimentary internet and parking, complimentary continental breakfast (quite nice) and much more. If you enjoy a quiet and upscale boutique experience, rather than a large hotel atmosphere, this hotel will not disappoint!
There is a wide range of possible activities nearby, from the beautiful beach and boating, to the beautiful shopping areas of Las Olas and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea (driving distance), Miami Beach, etc.. There is also a lovely upscale restaurant attached, and it’s even fun just to sit out front and watch the fancy cars go by.

Ahhh, cruising! What joy, for those who love it…even as we were getting off the ship we wanted to get back on go again! This is definitely a compliment to the beautiful Navigator of the Seas, which we had just sailed to Cozumel, Belize City and back on a 5 day itinerary.
Note: As always, click on the pictures for full-sized view. If you have any questions or would like to see more pictures, please feel free to email me at admin@travel-like-a-pro.com.

The Navigator of the Seas (Royal Caribbean Voyager Class), anchored off Belize
Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas is part of the Voyager class of ships, like the Adventure of the Seas we went on two years ago. The ships in this class are all nearly identical, and offer a quality experience. We also found the ship to be quite similar in style to the larger RCI Freedom class we sailed last year, although with Freedom’s larger size and more recnet launch and design, the Freedom offered extras such as the Flowrider surfing simulator and the huge H2O Zone for kids.

Downtown Miami from the Port, on the deck of the Navigator (we sailed late due to a Norwegian ship issue, as we took on some of their passengers)
We began our cruise in the Port of Miami, a convenient and familiar port for us. The flight from Toronto is under 3 hours and it’s always easy to find a hotel for the pre-cruise night. We had a lovely dinner at the Bayside area of Biscayne, a lively waterfront market – highly recommended! During the day most days, you can see ships in the cruise ship port from here, and it gets you excited for the next morning when you know you’ll be boarding yours.
The beautiful Jewel of the Seas sailing out of Miami
Embarkation
As always, we arrived fairly early (before noon) and found no line up at all. We were able to get right on the ship and look around before most of the other passengers had arrived, a pleasure of ours as we like the feeling of having the ship to ourselves and being able to take pictures without the crowds.
Having been on the Freedom of the Seas last year, I was a little worried about finding the boat small or old, but it was neither – she was gorgeous in every way! This Spring I sailed the Rhapsody of the Seas and although she was also beautiful, I found the ship way too small for me, and was concerned that the Freedom had spoiled me for any other subsequent cruise. Thankfully, the Navigator proved that wrong and the entire journey was a pleasure.
The staff in the crusie ship terminal are friendly and helpful, and after tipping the porter to take our luggage, we were on the ship within a few minutes. The Navigator was decked out in Holiday splendor, as our sailing took us into early December.

The Navigator Promenade, all decked out for the Holidays
Note: the baggage handlers are very busy and handle large amounts of luggage: if you have delicate or fragile items you may wish to carry them on board with you in a carry on. My sunglasses case with extra shades in it was nestled in a side pocket of my suitcase and was somewhat crushed when I received it in my stateroom…luckily the case did its job and the expensive sunglasses were fine. Lesson learned.
The Ship
Like all Voyager class ships from Royal Caribbean, The Navigator holds just over 3100 passengers at full capacity, and is capable of sailing almost anywhere in the world. This particular ship had just come from doing the summer in Europe, and can easily be envisioned fitting in there. She is elegant and tasteful inside and out, without the neon and flashiness of some of her rivals, such as Carnival. Every cruise line has its dedicated fans, and Royal Caribbean tends to attract Europeans, middle class Americans, Canadians and Spanish from places like Mexico and other Central American countries. The ship’s passenger demographic will depend, of course, on the port of embarkation, but Royal Caribbean does not tend to attract party animals as much as, say, Carnival.

Navigator docked at Cozumel, alongside the lovely Celebrity Equinox
The Navigator and its sister ships are all about the experience on board, and offer a host of things to do while at sea, which may partially explain that there were only two stops on a 5 night itinerary. These ships have a spectacular indoor promenade with shops and cafes, as well as many other areas geared toward entertaining guests. There is a wide variety of things to do on board, including:
The ship decor is, for the most part, very elegant with a nautical theme. Some of the artwork adorning the hallways was a bit too…unique…for us, but overall the ship is lovely, especially in the common areas. Everything is kept immaculately clean, and the staff was always friendly and helpful in our experience.

May I say right from the start: Aaaaahhhh, what a lovely oasis this is in the center of Las Vegas!
From booking to arrival to departure, the MGM Grand Signature in Las Vegas was a pleasure to deal with and stay at. While most hotels in the Las Vegas Strip area feature an elaborate theme, smoky casinos and a lot of neon, the Signature is the exact opposite. Set back from the MGM Grand main hotel and accessible by its own private hallway with conveyor belts (it’s further to walk than it looks!), the Signature is more upscale and private.
The Signature has its own gated entrance area, and comprises three separate, connected buildings, each with their own amenities such as decadent pool and spa area, gym, and elegant hotel lobby. The buildings feel very secure and private, and are a world away from the hustle and bustle of the strip, although you are only a block away from all the action. There is no smoking in the hotel, and no casino – you can easily access the MGM Casino through the private walkway. All of MGM’s shops and fabulous restaurants at Studio Walk are also available via the private indoor walkway, and there is a food court as well.
The suites in the MGM Signature are impeccably kept, whether they are privately owned or part of the hotel’s inventory. Many private owners offer their suites for rent when they are absent, and as such you can book a suite directly through the hotel, via any travel website, or by private booking sites such as VRBO (this is where I booked my suite and it was absolutely perfect in every way for my needs on this particular trip, as well as being quite a bit lower than the hotel’s retail rates. We often use this site to find villa and suite rentals for our travel needs). You will find housekeeping service is mandatory, and will be charged a daily fee for the various housekeeping tasks. Even with the fee included, the MGM Signature is still worth the price and is quite reasonable. As an aside, here is a blog post I wrote about the pleasure of staying at this particular hotel: On Living Your Dreams
Each suite includes all the amenities you’ll need for a short- or longer term stay. A kitchenette, for instance, is extremely useful for both storing and cooking food, and comes stocked with dishes and cooking utensils, a small stove, microwave, fridge and sink. Also included is wireless internet, a separate and comfortable sitting area and desk with chair, and a gorgeous bathroom with separate tub and shower, and two sinks. All finishes are upscale and classy, with none of the flashiness you find in other hotels in the area. See pictures below, all taken from the specific suite we rented via VRBO.com.

Cancun, Mexico is one of the top winter holiday destinations, for North Americans and Europeans alike. Cancun offers a fabulous combination of amenities and features, from luxury hotels to budget rooms and exciting nightlife to the quieter, more relaxation-oriented Riviera Maya just south of the city.

What to Expect
Cancun is a tropical destination at any time of year, so bring plenty of cool, breezy clothes and sunscreen. The average annual temperature is 80 degrees F. Although experiences plenty of sun year-round, the ‘off-season’ from May to October brings some rain.*
You will be dazzled by the white sand beaches, turquoise waters and swaying palm trees. The hotel and resort choices are staggering in numbers, and if you do a little research before you book (based on what is important to you) you are sure to find something which suits your taste and budget. The hotels are arranged along the coastline, so almost every one is oceanfront.
Visit our Cancun hotel zone map with hotels listed, and click here to visit Cancun-Travel-Guide.net for more specific information about Cancun. See also Mexico Safety Tips.
The local people, as in all of Mexico, speak Spanish, although you’ll find some people in the resorts who speak English. They accept American currency everywhere, as well as Mexican pesos.
Cancun is a master-planned tourist destination, and you can find just about anything you’re looking for in the greater area. If nightlife and shopping and crowds are just what you’re after, be sure and stay in the main ‘strip’ which is the quintessential Cancun experience, popular with a younger crown, for the most part.
Outside of the city both to the north and the south, are quieter, more upscale areas, mostly populated with 4 and 5 star all inclusive hotels, many quite decadent. If this is more your scene, look for keywords such as Mayan Riviera, Riviera Cancun, Mexican Riviera, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
*Notes: As with most of the Caribbean, Cancun is prone to hurricanes between June and October, and visitors are advised to pay attention to storm watches. Also, Cancun travelers are advised to avoid swimming in the waters between the 2nd and 4th weeks of April. This is the mating season for thimble jelly-fish, and they gather along the shores, resulting in fever and other possible complications for those with whom they come in contact.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village in beautiful Waikiki, O’ahu is one of the most popular hotel complexes on the island. It offers a safe, upper-end Hawaiian experience for the discerning traveler in search of comfort, convenience, great shopping and food. (This means that if your idea of great travel is staying in a cheap motel, getting off the beaten path and meeting the locals, then the Hilton Hawaiian Village will not suit your needs, unless you use it as a home base for your island adventures, allowing you a luxury sleep at the end of your day.) If, however, a sense of luxury and beautiful hotel grounds with a Hawaiian feel is your idea of a good time, then read on for our review!
NOTE: Click on pictures for a larger view. See also Islands of Hawaii
The Hotel
The Hilton Hawaiian Village is located directly on a broad swath of safe, swimmable beach in beautiful Waikiki, with a fabulous view of the famous Diamond Head mountain.
Honolulu and Waikiki are alongside each other, and the Honolulu airport is perhaps 20 minutes (without excess traffic) away by car or taxi.
The Hilton grounds are impressive, meandering around several tall towers with rooms of varying categories and views. There are myriad pools and waterfalls to enjoy, some with waterslides, and a central landscaped garden and shopping village.
All of the grounds, from street to beach, are impeccably landscaped and well kept, leaving the visitor to enjoy wandering through the ‘village’ to their heart’s content.
Shopping & Dining
You will find stores of every variety at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, from the ABC Store for convenience items and inexpensive souvenirs, to boutiques selling bathing suits and sarongs, designer and local jewels, pearls grown in shells to delight guests, and designer boutiques such as Louis Vuitton.
There are plenty of shopping opportunities within walking distance of the hotel, however almost everything you might need is available on sight. You may wish to leave for dining alternatives, although there are plenty of choices within the village. You will find everything from beachside casual fare to fine dining in a la carte restaurants within the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Note that food and drinks are not part of the room fees at the Hilton, and any expenses incurred can be signed to your room.
Nearby and within walking distance are some different and sometimes less expensive options; an Oriental buffet and a Thai restaurant and an IHop and Coffee House respectively are right across the street.
O’ahu Scenery & Beaches
Whether you rent a car or book and excursion or two (your travel agent or even the concierge staff at the Hilton will be pleased to help), there is plenty to see and do on the beautiful island of O’ahu. The beaches are beautiful and surfing opportunities abound for the more adventurous. Sandy Beach is a local hangout for very experienced surfers – you will not be allowed to swim unless you are demonstrably capable of handling the strong surf.
Other, calmer beaches are plentiful – try driving north-east towards Kailua for beautiful and swimmable beaches such as Makapu’u and Waimanalo. The waves splashing up in many places as you circumvent the island are absolutely stunning, and are themselves worth the drive. You may see whales, marvel at the famous Halona blowhole, and you will enjoy the black rock formations created by long-frozen lava flow.

Calmer Waters at Waimanalo Beach
Driving through the mountains is another breathtaking experience. You’ll find the weather changes as you drive around the island and as you change altitudes from beach to mountain pass. Be sure to take the winding jungle road to the Pali lookout, purportedly considered by Mark Twain to feature the most beautiful view in the world.
Back at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in the evening, you’ll find hand-lit torches and musical accompaniment to whatever you do, and the atmosphere is pure magic as guests gather on the beach to watch the famed Oahu sunset.

Hilton Hawaiian Village at Sunset
Enjoy!
TIP: Wherever your travel plans may take you, be sure and check out the deals from Orbitz, one of the most competitively-priced travel providers we’ve found. (Example: last weekend on the way home from Hawaii, I needed a one-night hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia. Having researched on both Expedia and Orbitz for price comparisons, I booked through Orbitz at a rate of $110 for the same hotel which was $192 on Expedia. That’s the truth!)

For a quick stay in Miami, Florida, you might be tempted to book a night at an inexpensive hotel such as Holiday Inn. We did so via Priceline, and for a great price of $60 figured we had scored a good deal. Following is our review.
Location
The location of the Holiday Inn Miami Airport is extremely convenient to the airport rental car entrance and exit, and you will not have to take a taxi far if that is your transportation of choice. If your priority is to be close the airport then this hotel will fit the bill.
On the downside, it is located on an odd corner which is not always easy to navigate, especially for those unfamiliar with the area. Be sure you understand where you’re going before you set out; if you miss the turn it will take a while to get yourself turned around. Additionally, there is not much to do within walking distance, as the hotel is fairly isolated in its own little section between on and off ramps. The fact that it backs onto a river accentuates this isolation.
The Hotel
The Holiday Inn Miami Airport is billed as a 3 or 4 star hotel, depending upon which review website or book you refer to. We found it to barely fill the promise of a 3 star. While it technically offers certain amenities, such as a tiny internet desk, a concierge desk and in-room amenities such as maid service, toiletries and a phone, this is where it ends. We found the hotel to be run-down, with peeling paint in even the common areas, musty smelling rooms and a damp, dark overall feel. We were a little surprised to see that even in the public washroom in the lobby, there was a wall of peeling paint and a naked light bulb. To their credit, they were renovating when we visited so it’s possible that things have improved somewhat.
Overall, we have found there to be better value hotels in the greater Miami area for the same price. For instance, within the same month we stayed at the Hyatt hotel in downtown Miami – through Priceline at $60 – and we enjoyed far more amenities, a better location with more dining and entertainment options (both within the hotel and in walking distance) and a vastly better room, as well as a welcoming and spacious lobby area. Admittedly, the Hyatt is neither near the airport nor does it offer 5 star luxury, but it is just an example of an option that is available at the same price for those who look, and is light years above in terms of the overall experience.

The Hotel
The Occidental Grand Flamenco Punta Cana is billed as a 4 star resort, and in many ways it fills this assessment. There are several pools, bars and restaurants and a small bit of entertainment in the evenings, so technically it meets the requirements of a 4 star billing. The staff are plentiful and work hard to keep everything clean and presentable.
Upon entering the open air lobby you will be greeted with beautiful views of the pools and interior grounds, which are beautifully landscaped and expansive. Once you are checked in, you will be taken to your room – with your luggage – in a golf cart. You may wish to tip your attendant.*
The rooms and suites are laid out in a network of buildings (edificios) and are fairly nice – spacious and tropical. As you might expect at a 4 star in the Caribbean, there are certain issues with the rooms. For instance, many have problems with water flow in the bathrooms, and in our ground floor room (we moved after two days to a balcony room on the second floor) we had a pet cockroach that lived in the floor drain of our bathroom. There are some inconsistencies such as missing pieces (ceiling fan and luggage rack in one room but not the other), but overall the rooms are quite acceptable. The vast majority of rooms have no ocean view; you will have either a garden or a partial ocean view if you’re lucky, unless you’ve paid extra for an ocean view.

View From Balcony – Royal Club to the Left
The Punta Cana Beach
The beach in Punta Cana is actually called Bavaro beach, and it is as stunning as the pictures you’ve likely seen. The sand is powder-soft and pinkish-white. If you look closely, you’ll see tiny bits of pink in the sand, which are pieces of crustaceans from the ocean and which give the sand its pinkish hue. Rolling up endlessly all along the beach are waves in the most brilliant shades of turquoise – the water is clean, clear and safe, and there are no rocks or dangerous sea life to worry about as in other destinations. Often, seaweed will be left on the beach overnight and it is usually cleaned away by hotel staff who work along the shoreline at dawn. Note there is not much quality snorkelling to be had along the main hotel stretch of Bavaro beach – there simply are no rocks or coral to attract the fish.
The hotel grounds are directly on the beach and all rooms are within walking distance for anyone with normal mobility. The beach itself is absolutely stunning, from sunrise to midnight and beyond…always there is a beautiful experience to be had. As other reviewers have mentioned, the beach chairs do get taken fairly quickly (I saw people putting ‘reserved’ towels on chairs when going for a sunrise run at 6:30am!), and you’ll not find a chair under a palapa unless you’re very lucky, until people begin to leave at sunset.
Our stay in Punta Cana was during Holy Week, in April of 2009. We were informed beforehand that many activities, such as watersports as well as the availability of alcoholic drinks outside of our resort, would be severely curtailed during this week. We found this to be an exaggeration – the entire week, the beaches in front of the hotels were full of vendors selling watersport experiences; parasailing, boating and snorkelling, and many others.
Schedules
Note that many of the activities listed as included are either not readily available, are listed incorrectly on the hotel schedule, or are difficult to find and are offered for sale far more prominently. For instance, respectively, horseback riding was only available two or three days in the entire week of our stay, and when we asked (Tuesday) it was too late (no more riding until the following week); one family arrived for the archery listed at 2:30pm and were told it had actually been at 9am; watersports and excursions were being pushed extensively throughout the resort – it’s difficult to walk the grounds without having to say ‘No, gracias’ a few times.

Dune Buggy and ATV Excursion, Dominican Republic
The Staff
This brings us to the Occidental staff, most of whom spoke Spanish and little to no English. The service and attitude here falls short of 4 star by a long shot. While in other resort destinations when we attempt to speak the local language out of respect and are met with appreciation, here the staff seem to be annoyed at the guests’ inability to speak Spanish. If they do understand any English they often pretend not to, unless they are trying to sell you something. If you’re asking for something (a drink or a room change) they are not particularly gracious, and in fact give the impression that you are putting them out. Unlike in hotels in North America, the staff do not seem to feel as if they are there to help the guests. I would chalk this up to the poverty on the island, except that I have experienced gracious hospitality in many poor destinations, such as Mexico, Jamaica and many other islands. Also note that the ‘guest services’ concierge in each edificio is little more than a salesperson for the Occidental Royal Club membership program.**
Food & Drinks
This is another area where we felt the 4 star promise fell short. We know that in many places food is not the strong point, especially at all-inclusive resorts, however this resort failed miserably. The food was abysmal, even at the specialty restaurants, which were pretty but offered food that can only be described as sub-par. We knew from our first meal that it was going to be a long week food-wise, and had hoped that the a la carte restaurants would offer us a break, but alas our hopes were dashed. Throughout the resort, the food was almost uniformly flavourless – we joked that they must have a flavor-extracting machine in the kitchen. Even the fresh fruits and vegetables had no taste, as if they had been soaked in water for hours. Pasta was limp, sauces were bland and drinks were almost certainly watered-down. We would not complain, of course, given how little food many of the locals have access to, however there are many resorts and other venues (Royal Caribbean cruises come to mind) which do a far better job of providing a variety of tasty food. We found ourselves longing to ask the locals to bring us a little sample of their own cooking – we imagined it to be spicy, tasty and genuine – very unlike the resort fare. Also, the tables, plates, cutlery and glasses in the restaurants were not always clean, a big negative for us.
Tipping
*While this is technically an all-inclusive resort and tipping is not required, one look outside the resort areas will show you the abject poverty which prevails here. Some, but not all, guests bring a supply of American dollar bills to offer various staff for tips. We tipped our driver, our room maids and various waiters, and they all seemed to appreciate it greatly. Even if they don’t show appreciation (not the friendliest staff here overall), we are sure that every little bit helps. Indeed, if you take an excursion you will see many small children with nothing more than ragged shorts on – many people bring candies, clothes or other small gifts to give to the local kids when traveling outside the resort areas.
The Royal Club
**Like many resorts these days, Occidental offers a ‘special’ place for guests who are willing to pay for extra service and a sense of privilege. The Royal Club enjoys a separate block of rooms at the center of the resort, and many of these rooms are ocean front. Note with caution however that many are NOT ocean front, and in fact have some pretty un-extraordinary views. At this resort, Royal Club members enjoy their own private restaurant, several ‘extra’ services and a private beach area with covered loungers. Royal Club membership allows members to enjoy privileges at all Occidental resorts, and you can find information about entry costs both online at Occidental.com as well as on each Occidental property. Note that as a ‘regular’ guest you will be subject to attempts to get you to attend an introductory session detailing Royal Club membership benefits. Once we had made it clear to our building’s concierge that we were not interested, he had no time for us and only said hello if we did.

I've noticed that many people find this site by searching for pictures of various hotels, ships and resort locations. I myself look for pictures when deciding where to go on vacation, and appreciate good collections.
You will find pictures in each travel review, and there are more collected here for your viewing enjoyment, listed by category below. This list will be added to regularly, so check back often!

Adobe Grand Villas – Sedona, Arizona
35 Hozoni Drive, Sedona, AZ 86336
First let me say I am fairly picky as a reviewer and as a customer, although I prefer to think of it as discerning.
I expect 5-star service when paying ‘certain’ prices, and if there are issues I expect them to be dealt with immediately and with a cheery attitude.
The Adobe Grand Villas in Sedona, Arizona is one place that seems well worth the average price paid, with one important caveat: this depends upon what your expectations are. For instance, if you like huge mega-resorts or are looking for glamour or glitz, this is not the place for you. On the other hand, if you appreciate a tucked-away retreat with impeccable attention to detail, privacy and the feeling of an upscale residential villa, this may be just the ticket.
Grand Adobe Villas in a bed and breakfast by definition, as they serve a delightful homemade breakfast to guests each morning, but this is where we find the similarity to end between this and other bed and breakfast establishments. Most bed and breakfast accommodations are geared towards the traveler who would like to save money; they are often in an older home and, having been decorated lovingly by the owners, are usually eclectic and very ‘personal’ in feel. Grand Adobe Villas, on the other hand, while delivering exceptionally friendly and personal service, offers the elegance and discretion of a small, intimate, first class boutique resort hotel. It’s tucked away out of sight of the main roads in Sedona, and if you didn’t have directions you’d never find it. There are not likely any drop-in guests, and this is definitely a sanctuary for those who’d like some privacy and quiet.
The rooms (villas) are beautiful, spacious and extremely private; the service is both discreet and very thorough; the food is so incredibly fresh that you think they’d just made it – which they did. You will find fresh bread baking in your room upon arrival (as well as a decent array of other complimentary snacks), and depending what time of day it is, you’ll find fresh snacks and hors d’oeuvres laid out in the main, elegant lobby area.
While most of the villas are fairly ‘rustic’ looking, all are extremely decadent at 850 sq. feet, with beautiful king beds, fireplaces in both the living room as well as the very spacious bathroom, huge soaking tubs with jacuzzi jets and private patios and/or balcony areas. Many rooms enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains, while others have that ‘tucked-away’ feel, with intimate private garden settings including outside seating and privacy shrubbery. Each villa is uniquely decorated.
Common areas include a well-landscaped pool and spa area (really pretty at night with subtle lighting and a blanket of stars overhead), and the main lobby area, where you have your meals and possibly gather for rest or relaxation in front of the enormous and welcoming fireplace. The entire property is landscaped and decorated with a classy, subtle upscale touch, and from the fresh baked bread to the delicious and thoughtful breakfasts, the guest experience is one of indulgence and relaxation.
Sedona itself is stunning, by the way, and worth the drive!
NOTE: If cost is a factor, you may wish to search for the best deals on this property. They have a website where they offer specials, however we found an even lower price on expedia.

When visiting the exciting city of Las Vegas, Nevada, there is no more iconic place to stay than the Bellagio on the famous strip. Since it opened in 1998, the Bellagio Hotel and Casinohas played host to famous entertainers and world leaders, as well as many events and celebrations. Loyal clients return to the Bellagio for the renowned level of service, discretion and quality, a rare find in over-the-top Las Vegas.
Overview
An Italianate palace with a glimmering blue lake in front, the Bellagio evokes a feeling of being in Europe. Famous for the magical fountain show it displays every night, the Bellagio is a tourist destination unto itself. People come from all over the world to see the fountain shows, which have been featured in many movies (think Ocean’s Eleven) and countless photos. Set to music, the shows are precisely choreographed and really a remarkable and inspiring sight to see.

The Bellagio hotel and grounds are stunning, and obviously were designed to surprise and delight at every turn. From the cobble-stoned street out front lit by wrought-iron lamps to the ornate fountains, greenery and custom glass pieces throughout, each detail is part of a larger melange of splendor. The decor easily rises above many of the tackier, themed hotels on the Las Vegas strip.
You’ll find much to do at the Bellagio, from the indoor pool and spa to award-winning restaurants, the fabulous indoor and outdoor gardens, a world-class shopping promenade featuring all the major design houses and of course, a thriving casino. Gamblers will find everything from slot machines to high-stakes tables in private VIP sections. As of this writing, Bellagio hosts the fantastic Cirque du Soleil extravaganza, ‘O’ – a definite must-see while in Las Vegas.

All rooms are beautifully decorated and welcoming, and many overlook the blue lake and its fabulous fountains. You will find a range of room categories and be sure to check their website for any current special offerings. http://bellagio.com/
There are more shopping and nightlife venues surrounding the hotel, and many other attractions within walking distance. You’ll even find a moving sidewalk to take you out to the street. Many other hotels offer sights and sounds to dazzle the imagination, and just walking around can be an adventure. The Bellagio’s location mid-strip is ideal and you can get to almost everything from the Bellagio – if you wish to leave, that is!
